55 minA Wall Street manager who ended up in crack houses
Dan Ryan/Thirty-eight years sober
His dad gave him $40 out of desperation. He spent it on fentanyl and overdosed in the car outside.
Alan Griffin used from twelve to thirty-one. His last day was crack, heroin and fentanyl laid out in his father's condo, and it ended with him overdosing in a car after his dad handed him $40 because he had run out of anything else to try.
His father told him to stop calling him his father. He went into treatment for the fourteenth time, and that was the one that held. He is honest that nothing about the fourteenth was obviously different except that he meant it.
Fifteen years on he does more work on himself than he did in his first year, through intensive trauma work and a marriage that began in recovery. He is now National Director of EAP and Union Partnerships at Banyan, getting first responders and veterans into treatment.
