Corey Warren/Heroin and alcohol, in recovery
Raquel Herrera heard it from the doctors in plain words. It still took more than that to stop.
Raquel Herrera was told by her doctors that one more drink could kill her. She talks about alcohol, the drugs that came with it, the relapses, and the grief that kept pulling her back.
We spend a long time on the behaviour underneath the drinking: the lying, the manipulation, the need for control and the isolation. Those were still there when the alcohol was not, and they were what had to change.
What finally held for her was surrendering control, finding faith, and getting out of her own head by helping other people and volunteering. She is clear that she had to find her own path through recovery rather than borrow somebody else's.
