I overdosed on water and woke up from a coma

Drugs took the loneliness away first. Then they took everything else, and a near-death left him starting again.

John Rokee started using young, to get out from under loneliness and insecurity. It worked, for a while, and then it stopped being a choice. Rehab, legal trouble and a near-death experience followed.

The more interesting half of this conversation is what happened after the drugs were gone. He swapped them for other coping behaviours before he got honest, and then went at the fear underneath through therapy, somatic trauma work and AA.

He is careful about one thing in particular: building a life in recovery rather than making recovery the whole of his identity.
